We all consume hot and cold drinks constantly. Nothing beats an ice-cold juice on a scorching day or the comfort of knowing that you can leave your coffee for more than a few minutes and when you return it won’t be a lukewarm disappointment.

We always want the best of both worlds, but when it comes to a product delivering top performance in two very different areas – one often fails. Sometimes though, we find hidden gems that deliver. One exception to this rule is the Zojirushi Travel Mug.

What is the Zojirushi Travel Mug?

The Zojirushi Stainless Steel Travel Mug uses vacuum insulation to keep drinks hot or cold for over 6 hours. Its plastic components are BPA free and the inner container is made from an easy to clean non-stick material.

Heat loss is prevented by removing the air between the outer and inner layers of the stainless steel minimising temperature changes of your beverage. Watch the video below to see just how it works.

Pro’s and Con’s

Does it retain heat for more than 6 hours?

The short answer – absolutely! Some may find it does its job a little too well. Let me explain. Typically, I use this to carry my hot beverages to work. The very first time I tried this, I filled it with my brew (at 6:00 a.m) straight from the kettle, fastened the lid and set off on my day. During my tea break, I reached for my Zojirushi mug and was greeted by an outpour of steam – my tea was piping hot! I set it aside and carried on working.

Around 4:00 pm, at the staff meeting, I gave it another try. Surely it’s drinkable now? At this point, although not scorching hot, I still had a steaming beverage. Considering my tea was too hot to consume during the day, I came home with a lot still in my mug. I emptied the contents into a mug and to my surprise, it was still warm to the touch and at a much more drinkable temperature. This was around 7:00 pm.

So how did I combat the high heat retention? There are a few things you can do:

  • Fill the mug with 3/4 hot beverage and 1/4 cold water.
  • Leave the lid open for a while after filling.
  • Pouring the contents into a mug will aid cooling.

The methods I used varied. Whilst using the mug at work, I preferred pouring my tea into a mug. On the road, I would use the mix of cold water to help lock in a drinkable temperature.

What about cold drinks?

Now here’s where I was skeptical. Most travel mugs I’ve encountered that claim to keep drinks both warm and cold can only do one of the two. This one is an exception. I took this on holiday to Jamaica and vowed to ALWAYS travel with it. Before a long day of excursions, I loaded the bottom with ice and poured in my drink. I was outside with it all day in 40-degree heat. I returned home exhausted and collapsed in bed. The next day, when I went to clean it I was surprised to see little pieces of ice floating at the bottom. Needless to say, it never left my side.

Is it leakproof?

Is it easy to clean?

The Zojirushi Travel Mug is built for ease of cleaning. The drinking spout is easily detached from the lid giving you access to the smaller crevices. Within the lid, there is a removable insulation cap that also provides easy access to cleaning. Like many tall drinking bottles, a bottle brush cleaner allows for a thorough clean.

Final Thoughts

Usually for something like a travel mug I am reluctant to fork out anything over £10. Frugal… I know. However, after trying several other brands that just didn’t perform I decided to give this a go and I’m thrilled I did. The benefits of this mug far outweigh any negatives. Quality comes at a price and I have never been happier parting with my hard-earned coins. With both form and function, the Zojirushi Travel Mug remains a staple I don’t see myself ever replacing.
